Poms punch…a non-alcoholic summer drink

As soon as the summer hits, the water intake increases exponentially.  Drinking so much and so often we feel bored of plain water. The tea , coffee are  replaced by carbonated drinks.  Not only the carbonated drinks are loaded with carbon dioxide but also with refined sugar. By drinking these we invariably land into unquenchable thirst cycle.

Solution?  Drink as much as plain water as you can. But to make the drinks interesting, make use of natural sweeteners and fresh fruits, natural flavours like mint, coriander , lemongrass and other herbs.  One such drink I happen to make was this Poms Punch.

I love pomegranates, being from a family who grow lovely varieties of pomegranates back home in india, I know which one tastes better. But living here in London, we have to satisfy or tastebuds with what is there in market.

One such sunny day my daughter was enticed with this huge variety of beautiful pomegranate.Looking at it and i knew it must be sour .But  dear daughter wanted to give it a try. The huge pom came home. As soon as I broke it open, the red pearls spread everywhere. But I was not surprised that they were so sour to core.We usually love to munch on them as it is and would never make a juice. But for these  gorgeous ones had to go in blender.

What did I do?

Pomegranates waiting in blender…

  • Need more liquid for a drink: added coconut water
  • need sweetness: grapes went in
  • punch: lime juice was invited
  • some surprise: chia seeds jumped in

And Hola!  A healthy wealthy easy peasy yet so delicious summer drink was made and finished in no time.

Instructions
  1. Blend together pomegranate pearls and grapes to make a smooth mixture.
  2. Later add coconut water and lemon juice. Blend just for 10-15 seconds until well combined.
  3. In serving glass, add the ice cubes and pour in prepared poms punch. Sprinkle chia seeds. (They settle down and swell up eventually.)
  4. Garnish with lemon slice and mint leaves. Ready to serve.
Recipe Notes
  1. With the same drink a mojito can be prepared by substituting coconut water by soda water and skipping chia seeds.
  2. There is no need to pre soak the seeds.  They swell up as we enjoy the drink.
  3. As it has fresh fruits, it is advisable not to prepare drink in advance as it might ruin taste.
