Oreo cookies doughnuts
Doughnuts! Everyone loves them. But I always try to avoid them for the fact that they are made with fermented plain flour, later fried and topped with more sugary coating. When our own Jalebi was declared the World’s most fattening food ,I wondered where were the doughnuts? Its similar technique used to make both. Ohh forget it! When it is a cheat or treat day Both are unhealthy yet tasty 🙂
Ah! There are so many variations of doughnuts available..chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, jam filled , cinnamon sugar coated, nutella, chocolate ganache, salted caramel, custard etc etc.I recently came across Oreo cookies doughnuts in supermarket which gave me idea to kill two birds with one stone.First being to fulfil demand of daughtie to make doughnuts which her mummy always avoided and second being to use up Oreo cookies sitting in cupboard. And I was happy to achieve both.
Eggless and wholewheat:
It is always easier to bake with eggs as they are good leavening agents as well as provide moisture, structure and richness to baked products. And plain flour has much gluten than wholewheat which helps to rise the dough far better than wholewheat. But when one has obsession ,what can be done? I am forced to use healthy ingredients as much as I can and it makes the baking difficult.
I wanted to make eggless recipe using wholewheat so it took some time, trials and errors to reach to the recipe I’m happy with now. It still need bit of improvisation to reach to store bought fluffy doughnuts made with eggs and plain flour but I’m sure to be there very soon!
But if you are alright using plain flour ,just replace wholewheat with plain flour and results will be better than the picture at the top.
Activate the yeast with warm milk and sugar. Later add dry ingredients , yogurt and butter to make a soft dough.
Steps to make:
Roll dough in 12-3/4 cm thickness . Cut doughnuts shapes.Brush with butter and keep covered to rest for 1-2 hours.
Doughnuts rise at least to double the height.
Fry them from both sides on medium heat.
Drain fried doughnuts on absorbent paper as they cool off.
Later dip them in icing sugar mix and top up with crushed Oreo cookies.

- In a small bowl, pour warmed milk and add in sugar.Mix in and when sugar dissolves, sprinkle yeast and give a quick mix. Leave it undisturbed for 5 minutes.
- (When you add yeast, the milk should be warm enough else the yeast doesn't activate.)
- In mixing bowl, add flour, powdered Oreo biscuits and salt. Pour in melted butter and yeast mixture. Make a soft dough .Use 1 teaspoon milk if needed.
- Roll the dough with consistent 1/2--3/4 cm thickness. Using a donut cutter or any round cutter ,cut donuts shape. (You use little cap for cutting centre part.)
- Lay all donuts in a tray lined with greaseproof paper. Leave some space between two donuts as they spread. Brush little melted butter so they don't dry. Cover and keep aside for 1-2 hours. The dough will take time to rise according to the warmth in the kitchen. (it is very cold where I live so I preheated the oven for 15 minutes at 180 degrees and later switched off.I kept donuts tray inside this heated oven.)
- Afterwards, fry the donuts on medium heat.Let them cool off till the icing is ready.
- Take icing sugar in a bowl and add milk little by little.Make a thick paste.
- Dip the cooled off donut in icing and later sprinkle pieces and powder of Oreo cookies . Follow same with rest of the donuts.
- Enjoy with milkshake/milk/hot cup of coffee.
- Donuts can be even fluffier if the wholewheat flour is replaced with plain flour.
- The place where donuts are kept to rise should be warm enough.
- These are not 100 % wholewheat as the Oreo cookies used are made with plain flour.
