Aliv (Halim) Ladoo

What memories these ladoos bring for us Indian ladies?

Most of the ladies should have some sweet memories of these ladoos. In india , we have many food traditions.

One such tradition is the importance of food eaten by a lady in postpartum days...the days when she’s struggling or rather juggling with new baby and her own mental and physical well being. In general we have few pantry ingredients which have plenty medicinal benefits and can be applied to bring back the vitality in the new mother.

  Importance of eating Gardencress:

Onesuch vital  food is gardencress seeds. They are packed with  iron, calcium,Vitamin A-E-C, proteins, Folic acid as well as fibre. Not just that but they have proven to be acting as antibacterial, antiviral . They even help to regulate the menstrual cycle because of the phytochemicals they have.

Well not our grandparents or the generations  before probably knew about the scientific contents or benefits of gardencress seeds but they definitely knew through their experiences that these seeds are perfect combination of goodness for the new mothers body.

In some parts of India, they serve kheer (porridge) of gardencress . Its made by boiling the seeds in milk and sweetened with jaggery. My friends always hated eating the kheer as it’s apparently very slimy . But thanks to my mummy who knew the recipe of these ladoos that I could  avoid the slimy kheer and enjoy eating ladoos. ☺️ .  They are so healthy , easy to make and not to forget sooo tasty that everyone in house love them. When soaked these seeds  get a translucent film around them which is fun to chew – quite similar to sabja/ takmaria seeds.

Haliv /aliv ( gardencress) ladoos are  packed with goodness of fresh coconut, jaggery and dry fruits and yes they have one tbsp of ghee (well of course if you want ,can add more) .  And last but not least, it’s no fail recipe .. No one can go wrong as there’s no sugar syrup to be made. 😄

Why just new mums? Even we all can relish these ladoos as they are pack of multivitamin themselves.

The recipe starts layering gardencress seeds, coconut and jaggery in a pan.

Sprinkle water / coconut water and leave it to soak.

After 4 hours or overnight soaking the mix, saute it till forms a lump and later shape ladoos.

  2. ( if you want to make ladoos straight away, skip the layering procedure and just soak the seeds in coconut water and jump to next step)
  3. Next morning the seeds bloom and have a transparent film coated around them. . Add 1 tbsp ghee, 1 tsp cardamom powder, chopped dry fruits of choice. Keep pan on medium heat, stir for 5-7 minutes or till the jaggery melts and mixture starts coming together. Switch of flame and keep mixture covered till it cools off little bit. When it’s still warm but comfortable to handle, make ladoos , roll them in coconut, or just simply garnish with dry fruits.
Recipe Notes

GOOD TO KNOW :

  • Ladoos can stay fresh for a week or can be refrigerated. Keep checking onto ladoos because if it's hot weather, the fresh coconut spoils quickly.
